What we look for in the people we hire.
-
01
Be genuinely open-minded.
Listen seriously to ideas that differ from your own. You don't have to agree with them, and you don't have to entertain ideas that are clearly bad. But you should be willing to understand why someone believes something before dismissing it.
We care about truth more than persuasion. The loudest or most confident person in the room should not automatically win. We want people who can see both the upside and downside of an idea, change their mind when the evidence changes, and be candid about problems they're facing so the team can help.

02
Be comfortable with abstraction.
Our work spans every level of the stack, from concrete engineering problems to abstract mathematics. You don't need a mathematical background, but you should enjoy thinking about concepts that aren't immediately concrete.
The ability to move between abstraction and implementation is fundamental to how we work.
-
03
Have enough conviction to have a vision.
We don't want people who simply follow the literature, existing conventions, or whatever has worked before. Good research requires knowing the conventions well enough to recognize when they should be broken.
You should be willing to form your own view, defend it, and pursue an unconventional direction when your judgment tells you it is right, even when you can't yet prove that it will work.
-
04
Be compelled by the North Star.
You don't need to be interested in our mission before you meet us. But by the end of the conversation, you should understand what we're trying to accomplish and genuinely want to help make it happen.
If you aren't compelled by the North Star, you shouldn't work here. That's okay: we'd rather have you pursue something you deeply believe in.

05
Build each other up.
We don't compete with each other. We make each other better.
You will initially own a specific area, and over time you will be trusted to lead others. That requires being comfortable with talented people around you: above you, beside you, and eventually below you.
We want people who can celebrate another person's success without feeling threatened by it, give credit generously, and help others become strong enough to eventually surpass them.
-
06
Have a purpose beyond status.
We don't care much about IQ, EQ, prestige, or credentials. Everyone here will be smart.
What matters is that you have some deeper reason for doing what you do: something that would still matter to you if nobody knew about it and you couldn't put it on your résumé.

07
Be resilient.
Research and engineering at the frontier are full of failure. At scale, systems break. Experiments don't work. Algorithms behave differently than expected. Things have to be debugged and rebuilt repeatedly.
We need people who can stay engaged through those painful, repetitive moments and keep moving forward. Resilience isn't about never getting frustrated. It's about being able to work through frustration without losing sight of the goal.
